On Indefinite Hold
So y’all, you may have noticed this week’s newsletter is missing. Well, time for a short talk.
When I started this newsletter in February, I honestly didn’t think I’d be where I am so quickly in June. This is great news for me, of course—I get to be an editor at a website full of great people—but in terms of the newsletter, it puts me in a weird position.
Being no longer a freelancer nor an active games journalist, it feels a little weird giving out advice. It’s not like my advice is suddenly invalid, but it will age as time goes on. Experienced in freelancing or not, if I’m not plugged into the whole gaming… industry… thing, I’ll eventually be unable to answer the important questions.
Also, for me, it’s a matter of mental health, as well. Freelance brain has you constantly hustling and working, and for me, that’s led to a lot of unhealthy work habits. I’m working hard to detangle myself from this mindset, and a lot of this involves stepping back from communities I’m over-invested in, as well as ignoring most of the Games Discourse that happens on Twitter.
With the newsletter, I feel a need to be connected to all this, so I can answer all the important questions. As a result, I’ll be stopping the newsletter.
So, what does that mean for y’all?
I’ll be canceling the subscriptions. You won’t be charged again! For those that signed up for a yearly subscription, Substack will refund you a prorated amount based on how many months you had left. I think? That’s what the settings page says, anyway! Edit: Due to the way that refunds need to be processed, subscriptions will be paused until the 15th, and then refunded.
All newsletters will be free for everyone to view. No need to paywall something that won’t be updated anymore, right?
I’ll update the resources page with all the resources I have in the next week or so. This will include communities to join and anything else I had, in hopes that they help!
To the LuckyAnon that asked about rates, feel free to DM me on Twitter or Discord about it. It’s a super complicated subject that I couldn’t really answer in one newsletter, but I can talk to you about it a little privately if you want.
Anyway, thanks to you all for supporting me, and make sure to check the Resources at the end of the month—it should have everything in there by then.
Here are some pictures of Sissel chilling. Once E3 is over, make sure to get some rest too!
